The School-Age Child Care Standards Committee was formed to develop MSDE Standards for Implementing Quality School-Age Child Care Programs.
The goals of the School-Age Child Care Standards Committee were to:
- Review specific areas of the current Standards for Implementing Quality Early Childhood Programs: Center-Based Child Care and Head Start to develop a similar document for school-age child care programs in order to ensure quality programs for all children.
- Review, revise, and adapt the Guides for Self-Appraisal and Validation from the Standards for Implementing Quality Early Childhood Programs: Center-Based Child Care and Head Start so there is a continuum of quality guidelines that include the school-age population.
- Review, revise, and adapt the best practices from the Team Leaders Resource Guide, the Standards from the National Afterschool Association and the School-Age Care Environment Rating Scale.
- Develop standards that reflect the current research and recommended practices.
- Provide clear, concise, and user-friendly documents that will assist programs in implementing and maintaining quality school-age child care.
The MSDE Standards for Implementing Quality School-Age Child Care Programs intends to define quality program standards across the various types of programs. Along with the standards, parents, educators, and community program staff will be provided with a greater focus on quality features of school-age child care programs. The standards will provide an opportunity to improve services for children, youth, and families.
